My mouth is dry first thing in the morning as though I've had nothing to drink for days and I don't sleep with my mouth open. This occurs during the day as well. It has been going on for 4 months. I recently had tonsilitis and the penicillin/steroids used to cure it haven't changed the dry mouth.

Try to rule out the cause. Some common cause of dry mouth include:
Dehydration due to fever, excessive sweating, vomiting or diarrhea.
Side effect of certain medications
Side effects of certain diseases and infections such as Sjogren's syndrome, diabetes, and anemia.
Smoking or chewing tobacco.

You can take certain steps that may help improve saliva flow like
-Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist.
-Chew sugar free gum.
-Use fluoride toothpaste for brushing your teeth.
-Take enough vitamin C in your diet.
-If you smoke, quit smoking.
-Drink green tea and pomegranate juice which is supposed to be good for oral health.
